Position Summary:
Under the direction of the CEO, the Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) is responsible for operating and managing the day-to-day operations of a mail-order pharmacy, ensuring the safe and accurate preparation, dispensing, and delivery of medications, and for maintaining the pharmacy’s full compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations. The PIC ensures adherence to all company policies and procedures, supervises pharmacy staff performance, and upholds the highest standards of professional practice, patient safety, and quality of care. The ideal candidate has experience with pharmacy OS technology, automated dispensing systems, and management and logistics operations for a mail-order pharmacy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Practice within the legal scope of pharmacist licensure and maintain an active, unrestricted North Carolina license
- Protect patient rights, including strict confidentiality of Protected Health Information (PHI), in full compliance with HIPAA
- Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to all pharmacy personnel, including technicians and support staff
- Assist with interviewing, selecting, and training new employees, and plan, assign, and direct daily activities
- Ensure pharmacy operations are performed within budget and in accordance with company performance and compliance standards
- Develop, implement, and maintain written policies and procedures consistent with state and federal pharmacy regulations
- Supervise the preparation, labeling, and dispensing of medications to ensure accuracy, sterility, and patient safety
- Review and verify prescriptions for accuracy, contraindications, and potential drug interactions
- Oversee all aspects of workflow, ensuring timely and efficient processing of prescriptions
- Manage and monitor staff performance and ongoing competency assessments
- Oversee orientation and continuing education for all pharmacy staff
- Maintain the physical security of the pharmacy and controlled substances
- Serve as a clinical and operational resource for prescribers, patients, and internal team members
- Ensure timely delivery of filled prescriptions and maintain accurate delivery records
- Ensure complete and accurate documentation for all dispensed products, patient counseling, provider communication, and operational activities
- Communicate patient needs to physicians, case managers, and care teams in a professional and timely manner
- Perform telephonic or electronic clinical assessments and follow-up as required
- Conduct and document internal quality assurance (QA) reviews and competency studies
- Participate in internal committees and staff meetings as pharmacy representative
- Dedicate approximately 10% of time to quality management activities
- Monitor and evaluate staff performance in alignment with established quality metrics
- Promote effective written and verbal communication across the department and organization
- Maintain compliance with all applicable accreditation standards (e.g., URAC Mail Service Pharmacy Standards, Version 3.0)
- Ensure continued compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including DEA, FDA, and Board of Pharmacy requirements
- Promote ongoing education and professional development for pharmacy staff
- Support patient, family, and community education regarding pharmaceutical care
- Pursue personal professional growth through continuing education and maintain all required CEUs for licensure
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy, or equivalent foreign degree with eligibility for North Carolina licensure
- Minimum 5 years of retail, clinical, or specialty pharmacy experience
- Experience in disease management, quality improvement, or utilization management preferred
- Managed care or mail-order experience desirable
- Unrestricted, active pharmacist license in the State of North Carolina
- Strong knowledge of state and federal pharmacy law and URAC accreditation standards
- Proven leadership and supervisory experience
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to make independent clinical decisions and provide sound professional judgment
- Proficiency in computer systems and pharmacy software; ability to learn new applications quickly
- Commitment to accuracy, timeliness, and continuous improvement
- Must pass background and drug screening requirements
